As we approach this special time of the year perhaps our thoughts are drawn to what Jesus did by going to the cross. Below is the passage from Frank Peretti's novel Piercing the Darkness which I read on Sunday. I like the way it describes the relationship between us The Cross and what Jesus did on it.

I could see that cross so clearly just as it must have looked on that bare forlorn hill 2000 years ago and I was flat on my face before it, so weighed down with my wrongs, my boasts my choices my self.

All I could do was lie there reaching out to that rough piece of wood like a drowning man reaches for a life line and grabbing hold for my very life. I had nothing to offer him, no incentive at all for Him to forgive me, not the slightest item of value with which to barter or cajole. All I had was what I was.

But He accepted me, my offering nothing more that myself was accepted I was what he had always wanted in the first place and he received me. He lifted the load from my heart and I could feel it go, I could sense it rushing up to that cross. I felt so light as though I would be carried away by the slightest breeze.

I was able to raise my head and saw the closing of our transaction; a trickle of blood running down the wood. The payment. I am free. I am ransomed. I am like a slave set free who was born a slave and never knew what freedom was like.

I want to get to know this Jesus who has ransomed me. We’ve only just met.

Roy's talk this week will be on the above rather than John so that we finish with the resurrection on Easter Sunday and not the week before, good planning! So, you could post some of your own New Year prayers to share, here's one I found and liked.

May God make your year a happy one!

Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,

But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;

Not by making your path easy,

But by making you sturdy to travel any path;

Not by taking hardships from you,

But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,

But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;

Not by making your life always pleasant,

But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,

and by making you anxious to be there to help.

God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Two weeks reflection

Due to one world week and communion we will not be visiting John for a couple of weeks, except at home when we're reading the next two chapters! So we have time to reflect again on what we have learnt so far. It would be nice, if people havethe time, to share with each other how the study has impacted us over the last few weeks - what have been our favourite verses, when has God spoken to us, what difference have the readings made to how we have done things.

As a starting point I have included in this post a prayer that Sue put into the last comments section as I think it is a powerful and lovely piece of writing.

The talk on Sunday (which I was able to listen to today thanks to the podcast) made me think of this prayer I heard years ago. A terminally ill patient wrote it out for me while I was a student nurse ; it was a way she was holding on to God during her illness, and we had a conversation about it. It inspired me!

"You are ushering in another day
untouched and freshly new,
so here I come to ask You God
if You'll renew me too?

Forgive the many errors
that I made yesterday,
and let me try again
dear God, to walk closer
in Thy Way.

But Father, I am well aware
I can't make it on my own.
So take my hand and hold it tight
for I can't walk alone."

Compassion Sunday

Next Sunday is our communion service so we take a pause in our study of the gospel of John with time to spend reflecting on what we have studied so far and on the work of Compassion International.

Compassion International Mission statement is: Releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name. In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.

Their website is http://www.compassion.com/default.htm.

We as a church, and as individuals, support a number of children and children’s charities around the world and this would be a good opportunity to remember that. We will set aside a time to pray, hear any news there might be and remember your part of this work as part of our communion service on that day.

This picture (from Switzerland) is currently captivating me as an image of God pouring his love down on us and using our weaknesses to flow through to others. It must be so frustrating for him when we think we need a bucket!
